7/3/08: MGS4 Miniature Review/opinion

This will be in the Videogame page.WARNING this contains major spoilers, seriously its been 3 weeks since it came out, you should have beaten it by now. Again, his will be posted at the very bottom of the videogame section and will include weird pictures from the game (how many times do you need to see Oldsnake's face broomstache included).

 *UPDATE, did the review, took me 2 hours then site froze so I will have to write it and post it soon, like tomorrow. But its not like you were going to read it anyway. So there's a crazy MGS picture from the game in the video game section at the bottom where the review will be to hold you over. I spent a long time to gather some rare picture from the game. Why? Because its one thing to say "hey did you see that during the game, I wonder if its online somewhere?" well here it is. Not a spoiler.

7/3/08:PS3 firmware 2.40!!!, XMB, bricked systems!

So word from playstation.blog is firmware 2.40 is down because some PS3 owners who have "experienced problems" (I heard some people now have bricked PS3's but I doubt it). Some may be truly having download problems, others could have made "mods" to their PS3's or put something on theirs that doesn't agree well with the PS3's belly and now it has an upset stomach. But hey, We got it no problem, well the XMB is a tad sluggish but in all fairness the system is running a game and accessing files at the same time. Besides many people begged for this firmware (and wanted it now!). But sometimes its good to let developers and programmers "do their thing" because if you rush something that could have been amazing may be released with flaws because of time constraints. In my opinion the PS3 is in it for the long haul and by firmware 3.0, things will get smoothed out, ya' know kinda like how the psp started; haters!

6/24/08:NIN Live, The Slip, Stickers, Dread-Mullet

Nine Inch Nails is going crazy, what with releasing a cd not every half a decade, being free to make whatever music they (he, Trent Reznor) wants to, and releasing it how (free!) and when (now!) they (he, Mr. muscles) wants to. Recently nin.com has updated with information on the upcoming retail release of the slip ,which is available for free high quality download, and will still be when it is released in stores. But why wouldn't you want to get the retail version when it comes  stickers? Well it is kind of confusing the way its stated but the way I interpret it is the retail version will be a 2 disc digipak, one being a cd and the other being a dvd of NIN performing live tracks from the slip at rehearsals, a 24 page booklet, and  stickers, exclusive stickers. In America, Canada and parts of Japan the digipak be limited and individually numbered ( you know how we love limited and numbered editions),  but not the case in Europe, UK (its in Europe?), Australia, and other territories. All this also be available in vinyl as well. Mean while check out NIN.com for live rehearsals of 1,000,000 and Letting You both from The Slip, both showing off:

6/20/08: Burn after Reading

I like movies. A lot of different kinds. Now, while saying this, I've never seen a Coen Brothers movie because they seem boring, except for the Big Lebowski, which was kinda funny. All the high-brow film connoisseurs are probably going bananas because their movies are "so good", but whatever. Yeah, I work at movie store, so what? Anyways, maybe it's just because it has Brad Pitt, but I'm interested in seeing their new movie, Burn After Reading, which looks pretty funny. You can watch the international trailer here.

It's been announced that Len Wiseman will be directing a Gears of War movie. You know, he directed Live Free, Die Hard. After I found out the writer is the guy who wrote the new movie, Wanted, and also the new Fast and Furious movie, you know... the fourth one. Do I really need to go on? Given the experience these two guys have, its not looking good for Gears. Ok, maybe Wanted won't be that bad, it's got Angelina and guns and cars, its can't be as mediocre as Live Free, Die Hard, right? I guess we will see.

6/16/08: Shirt Attack! The Dark Knight and MGS4

Well, let's just say we will have a full review of MGS4 up soon. We've already beaten it and are on our second way though. Also, we're playing MGOnline, which sadly put all of our stats back to zero so were stuck playing with idiots who run around like... well, you can use your imagination and put in some random overused idiom. My player name is redtinfox, so if you see me on the battlefield kicking... again, use your imagination, you can say hello before I kills you.

While at the local mall, we decided to stop by the Hot Topic and take a gander. Before I tell you what we got, let's just say that while both of us are "alternative" we realize that  if you want to express that you like a certain style/band/game/etc, you can express yourself without wearing a black shirt that says "goth" in big white letters. That's just one example. Just because you put on certain accessories and wear big baggy bondage pants with straps, doesn't mean anything. (By the way, baggy bondage pants make no sense because isn't bondage supposed to be tight? whatever). The alternative style is no longer underground because of stores like Hot Topic, but I guess I shop there once in a while, so its all my fault. So lookie what I got!

6/9/08: DO the Dew?

Tomorrow is the first official day of my vacation time, yes I took it off to play MGS4, and other stuff....but anyways no more talk about that, no more spoilers. Today I'm talking about "Mountain Dew's Dewmocracy" which is actually more exciting than our current political campaigns. A few months back "MD" asked the public to design a new flavor and now the final three flavors [Supernova (strawberry melon), Voltage (raspberry citrus),Revolution (wild berry)] all with ginseng "infused"? with "Dew". I will admit, sometimes I got to "Do the Dew" but its a bit too, what's the word, extreme? in my mouth, like citrus thrashing-it-up in my mouth, and don't get worked up about "Code Red". Honestly thought,all three drinks are very refreshing and could be quite bearable on a hot summer day waiting in line at some scorching theme park. But seriously, in our opinion (after a dual blind taste test, seriously) they all taste pretty much the same. Are they the same? No, but if I said "this one is strawberry" and you saw a reddish liquid in the bottle,you would probably taste strawberry. I don't think they (the "Dew" makers) made on flavor with three different logos/colors/names to trick us but they are all berry flavored and taste that way. Which ever one wins(I'm pulling for "Supernova"), we all still win, because they are DEW-licious, that is until they pull it off for what ever reason.Try it and vote, right now.

6/5/08: SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

Ok, you know I am a huge metal gear fan, obviously. I would say my expectations are so high that I hate to say it my I might be let down (I am a pessimist) but then again if the game meets, exceeds, and destroys my expectations, that is what makes a truly amazing game.I want to know about spoilers, but but I still want to be surprised?. But in a very good interview done by IGN with Hideo Kojima (creator, director, producer, MGS in human form), Hideo drops some spoilers himself. Now I don't know if it was a translation error or he totally meant to say it but, SPOILER!!!!!!

So there you go, probably an error, or could I be so skeptical that Kojima is trying to throw us off or is this more straight forward than expected? I know when I found out Liquid and Solid were twin clones of Big Boss I was shocked but not too shocked when Raider was being lead around by a computer; I guess there was more story than game play there but it's still a great game.

MGS4 Spoiler Alert: Part 2

You've gotten this far, so you must want to know. Again, this could be? a huge spoiler!

In his latest interview with IGN, Kojima stated that amongst other things, players would be able to find "face camo that changes the form of the face." He goes on to say "I can't really say in detail which kind of face it can form". This is at about the 5 minute mark in the interview. Now, like I said, there could be an error in translation (I doubt it), or it could be my skepticism that causes me to think he is trying to throw us off his scent.  The way Kojima puts it is that the face camo is something extra a player "can" find, if they want.

This "extra" is in all the trailers and has been the subject of much debate, and its only an "extra" like the tuxedo? Could it really be that simple?

6/3/08: Game News! (that you already know about, or do you?)

Hey, has anyone seen my octo-camo mask, I'm late to killing an entire genome army. Last night(Saturday night actually),I awoke to an obvious revelation, or is it? In most trailers and beta test, "Old Snake" is never wearing a his matching octo-camo mask that well, camouflages his face, his old wrinkly grandpa face and moustache?. 


Since the TGS 2006 trailer (showing a "Young Snake"), many people on forums have insisted that is always wearing a mask explaining how scars appear and disapear or even become  "Young Snake". I always thought this was a stupid idea, but where is his mask? well this is all scepticism, so we will see in 9 short days( my vacation is centered around its release, oh, yeah.

6/3/08: Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 now has a real site; after the countdown of like 100 and something hours revealing a new trailer, now with 10% more white zombies (not the band). I mean when Leon was in Spain killing Gondos no one said anything, I mean i really don't think Capcom is out to make a game about going to Africa and killing Africans, they did scrap the first version of the story where Chris hates black people so much he goes to Africa to kill them, wrong! that is not the case. In fact I am excited to see the game in such a diverse country with open land and volcanos. The new site really reminds me how much I really love the series, with eerie music and moans, I get a feeling of fight or flight, both with a shot gun. Capcom did mess up with the release of Okami for the Wii, from "IGN" the water mark on the cover of the Wii version to the removal of credits to the Clove Studios (now PlatinumGames), and now that team is working on a new game for Sega called...

Bayonetta, looking like Devil May Cry but with a hot chick, and guns, on her boots, in your face, litterally. There is not much news except that she is an eponymous (meaning given as a name) witch and she has guns. I might be a little biased but i already think it looks  good and all i saw was a teaser. There's an awesome new video showing gameplay from Lego:Batman. Check out this trailer that shows the Joker, and his girl, Harley Quinn beating up Gotham City Police officers! Seriously, I am so excited about this game... Batman is my favorite series and my favorite character is Harley Quinn. 5/24/08: The Dark Knight flavored chocolate!

Speaking of Batman, Reese's candy company has released Batman themed candy like a bat shaped Reese's Peanut Butter cup, Black and Blue Reese's Pieces, and even Kit-Kat bars with the Dark Knight logo stamped in them. Plus, you can also win The Dark Knight prizes, but no one really wins those things anyways. The losing pieces say "Ha Ha Ha! I got away with all The Dark Knight prizes - The Joker". Cheesy. What is cool is that each wrapper has trivia questions about the Batman movies. For example, my bat-shaped Reese's Cup asks: In Batman Begins, what did Bruce Wayne ask Lucius Fox after he first drove the Tumbler (AKA the Batmobile)?" Answer: "Does it come in black?" Nothing a regular schmoe couldn't figure out, but hey, its the thought that counts right? Also, they launched a website for the candies. Its worth a look at. Reese's Batman Site!

5/24/08: Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray?!

On National Treasure 2, there was a trailer for the release of Nightmare Before Christmas on Blu-Ray! Yay! I'm sure it will include a lot more bonus materials since Disney is also releasing a 2-Disc version at the same time. According to the trailer, the release is Fall 08, but I'm thinking it will be closer to Christmas, rather than Halloween. It's about time they re-released NBC, because they've been showing it around Christmas in theaters for years now, but there hasn't been any way to buy it (unless you go to eBay and pay like $30 or unless you are a real fan and got a copy before they went out of print. Yes I'm talking to you, emo/goth kids who think this movie is your favorite but didn't start liking it until you saw Jack Skellington on a T-shirt/wallet/purse/scarf /wristband at HotTopic and by then the DVD was out of print).

5/13/08: Stuff (Not all about Metal Gear)

So whats up, now young snake is all out and about. A new theatrical trailer and an ad for Regain Energy Drink have been released. Yes the new trailer is amazing, showing footage of other locations, action sequences, beauty and beast squad revealed and in this trailer you actually hear characters speak more than just in monologues. I have read some rumors that the "Revived" trailer ending might be Snake chasing down Liquid after MGS2, or that it is MGS1 redone on the Blu-ray disc (doubtfull), or that it is Snake just picking up MG Rex to battle Liquid Ocelot. So, is Young Snake just a mask? But he is even reluctant to shave let alone don a mask to look young, especially in front of Meryl.

5/13/08: Gears of War 2: Trailer

I'll be honest, I was going to wait out for a PS3 but I figure with a year to go, I'll get a 360 which promised full backwards compatibility through emulation. But has not been the best experience being that I played it rarely and it still red ringed (doesn't matter how much you play it can still red ring be cause the first few generations of xbox 360s were and are still DEFECTIVE) and after returning my mint 360, I get a shoddy refurbished one, after hours on the phone with Microsoft, I get another one, still in bad condition, so they win I give up I'll just keep it. After spending $400 on a system that they knew had problems I have to settle on whatever they throw me (the representative manager said there is no one higher than him). The elite model was not available when I bought mine and why should I plop down another $450 for another system that might break down and supported a failed media drive (hd dvd).

Really I hate the 360 because I kind of love it but it broke my heart. I wanted it to play original Xbox games (never had an xbox) and it had potential but morally I don't want to play it because I feel ripped off, but that will change (not really) when Gears of War 2 comes out. The new trailer looks amazing. Seriously I bought the 360 for Gears1 and now Gears2 will be longer and over all more epic. You can now battle Brumacks and hordes of Locust. Gears 1 had such a different feel to it, so fluid and instinctual and chainsaw bayonets awesomesss. The game could be difficult if you rushed in to it but if you took your time you could accomplish more and get a feeling of fullfillment becuase you didn't just make your way throught a level but instead ablitorate it. Gears of War 2 might not relieve my qualms and all my anger for the Xbox but it is truly a game I look forward to this November.

5/8/08: NIN Ghost I-IV LE

Yes... thats right... we sucked it up because we are NIN freaks and got the $300 Super Deluxe Limited Edition (we even registered our boxset online). We got it in the mail today and a super-safe, unpadded thin cardboard box. The presentation of the "stuff" was nice, the fabric was elegant looking and the giclee, which is unique to each box set, was cool. Of course, it was signed by Trent Reznor, himself. Was it worth $300? Well, if you don't have it, its worth $1000, but if you do have it, its worth $100. Overall, the set is beautiful and it feels limited, as in you know not everyone has one of these.

5/6/08: NIN: the slip

Trent did it again. Monday he release his new album, the slip, via his website for free. 100% Free, even if you wanted to get the one gig, better-than-cd, better-than-live, version. In our opinion, this is a continuation of Year Zero, but probably not the last chapter. The CD is a lot darker and a lot more "rock" oriented now that Josh Freese and Robin Finch (Amish farmer/upstroke guitarist) are putting their thoughts into it. We are in disagreement about the quality of the album, as RedTinFox thinks each song is distinct, each telling a different story that helps unfold the whole story of this universe. However, I think it all sounds the same and I just want to hear some good music. But he's the "real fan" and is currently buying mass military jackets and black hair dye and razorblades, nay, assault rifles.

5/2/08: Metal Gear Online: Beta Review

We can't really review the "game" yet because it is only a beta test session but it is awesome. I will be totally honest, I have never played an online game before, so really it is awesome to me, not compared to other games with online capabilities. If you love Metal Gear Solid than you will love MGO because it is pure action, always keeping you imersed in the game. In the "sneaking" game, which was recently added, one person plays as snake (if there is more than 11 people, another person plays as mk.II) and has to collect 3 dog tags while every one else battles. This was cool because on several occasions I played as snake and used the Octocamo. This mode also let you also see what it would be like to be an enemy soldier in any mgs game, because you pass by an undetected Snake and then bam!, your knocked out and Snake comes and takes your dog tag, and your gun, and your grenade and your dignity. There are also death matches, team dm, and capture the kerotan (frog) with more to come. The controls are a lot different than previous MGS games, for exaple L1 aims and R1 shoots, while X is duck/crawl/roll and triangle is zoom. I will post more as I continue to play more but this is a slight glimpse of what's to come and (in my opinion) I think it will live up to the hype.

One more thing, MGO has a "clan" feature so if you want to join Digital Moratorium's clan, our clan name is "f0xd1e" (f,zero,x,d,one,e) and my player name is r3dt1nf0x (words like fox or shalashaska are not accepted).

5/2/08: Metal Gear Solid: Revived?!

On gametrailers.com I saw a video for Metal Gear Solid: Revived for the PS3, showing a review of Snake in previous forms of MGS1. But then it showed Snake on Shadow Moses Island sneaking around the abandoned heliport but with PS3 graphics then it shows Old Snake waking up from a dream and Otocon asking if he is ok, saying it was "that dream again" then Kojima (with a poster for Assassins Solid behind him) asking if we liked it?. I'm guessing it is a joke, you know like when someone tells you your lost cat, missing for ten years, has shown up and then you find out it's fake and your cat actually died,  you know, that kind of joke.I really would like to see this come out,  but I doubt it will, more likely you go to the abandoned shadow moses base to seek Liquid Ocelot in MGS4. One more week of beta, four weeks of GTA 4(news coming soon) then MGS4 finally.

4/22/08: Discipline!

Picture from the Year Zero Booklet

Nine Inch Nails has released a new single, "Discipline", to radio stations which should be available for download today from NIN official site. From the lyrics (I see you left a mark up and down my skin) it sounds like this song will be part of the second half of Year Zero. If you haven't heard the album and don't know what it's about, check this site out (NIN Year Zero) or this one (NIN Wiki) because the album itself it part of a bigger picture of a world set 15 years in the future where things went way out of control. There are over 30 "viral" websites (which are up for a Webby Award... yes, they are real awards), each one reveals a small piece of a larger story that may actually be turned into a TV series (rumored).

MGS4: Online Beta Test.... Delayed...

So the Online Beta Test was supposed to be available Monday... but it was delayed until Tuesday... well, now its been delayed until Friday. I'm glad that they are working out the problems with the server now before the Official Launch but is this really a "beta test"? I mean the Online game is going to be released at the same time as MGS4, which is in like a month. If there is any problems are they going to be able to fix it in enough time?  I know this is just a ploy by Konami to get us to try the game, love it, then buy it and the expansion packs (which is already available for pre-order from amazon.com). Even though I won't really be testing any new MGS game, I still can't wait until Friday (or whatever day they finally decide to open it up, for America that is...)!

*Update: Uh....something happened to the MGO expansion... its not on Amazon.com anymore?! So maybe they are postponing the whole thing? I have no idea, but we will see soon. Commencing catvasion.

Blurb

After talking with a friend about how I sold my Wii because the lack of "sophisticated" games, he told me that there is a company in development to make an engine for the Wii capable of allowing it to have graphics equal to the 360 or PS3. Upon doing my own research (Google Search: Wii graphics test) I found a small article about a company named High Voltage that's developing an engine that they say will do this (they've already developed 5 games for it)... but after watching the videos on YouTube... sadly, they just look like PS2. Let's give them some credit, maybe the video I saw was lower quality because it was on YouTube or because I didn't see it in person, but it didn't look anything like Gears of War, or Heavenly Sword. In my opinion, when a game is developed for a specific console, and time is dedicated to that consoles engine, the graphics in turn will be amazing... on that system, for example, Resident Evil 4 looked great on the Cube. So what I'm trying to say is that because the games for the Wii are only for the Wii (usually) they should all have the best graphics the Wii can produce, or whats the point? Hopefully if the Wii does impliment a new graphics engine, HDMI output (at least 720), more responsive controls, and when I can walk out my door and pick one up at my K-Mart, I will get another one. Nintendo should have tried to implement these graphics before the system came out, but hey, they are outselling all the other consoles... for now.

4/2/08 Mr. Spoiler?

Ahh... I think we just figured out something interesting about the new movie, The Dark Knight, by Christopher Nolan. All information that follows is speculation and the rights to the names, characters, and ideas belong Warner Brothers.
SUPER SPOILER ALERT:
To read this information, just highlight the text. It is in written in the lightest color possible so you don't accidently see anything you don't want to.
Start Here: So the viral sites are back up and to make a long story short, if you go to the Joker's site "Rent a Clown' (linked below) on April 1st, you are given a site to go to and retrieve a bowling bag containing: a Joker colored bowling ball, a cell phone, and charger, and a Joker Playing Card. If you call the only number in the phone, using the phone, which is the only phone you can call that number from, you will eventually hear a message telling you when you should back. Then a familiar-sounding female voice saying something like "I know who you are, await further instructions". So we were thinking back and remembered **SPOILER** reading a "leaked script" and the final line was supposedly the Doctor, Dr. Harleen Quinzel says something like "Hello, Mr. J"... or maybe he told her to call him "Mr. J". (remember we are thinking back at least 6 months ago before it was done filming and before Heath Ledger died, so this may not be 100% correct). So we think the voice on the phone could be Harley Quinn. However, at this point in time in the Gotham alternate reality, she wouldn't be teamed up with the Joker yet, but why would they make that voice sound so much like her? They could have made it any plain monotone answering machine voice like in the beginning of the message, and I'm sure someone would have noticed the similarities in the voice.
    An actress, Sarah Jayne Dunn, claims she has been cast as Harley Quinn in the movie TDK, however, when Chris Nolan was asked about it, he just laughed and said "We'll see". Usually he likes to destroy rumors about his movies, but this he let slide. I guess we will have to wait and see.
    Remember, all of this is speculation, rumored and opinion.

4/2/08  Sneaky Snake!!?

    I cannot wait for all these next generation sequels (Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Resident Evil 5) finally coming to save us from this dredge of new IP's and disapointing "gimmicky" games and controls (sold my Wii, but thats a different topic). Maybe it's just me, I love the old familiar feel of a new chapter of a series; I know what to expect, I know it will be lenghty and I know it will be worth every penny and further remind you why you waited and make you realize that you were just trying to justify the new game's lack of substance, and length (8 hour games?) I want an epic masterpiece worth every delay. 

    Anyway, I just needed to say it, I can't get it out of my head about character connections in these new sequels (anything said is to be taken as opinion and rumors). Take Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, I remember when I first saw the poster for GOTP, it had Vamp, Meryl Silverburg, Raiden with Olga Gurlukovich's baby Sunny, Liquid Ocelot, Solid Snake, Otacon, Big Boss (this is the key to what I am going to talk about), and Noemi Hunter on it; now granted it was in the very beginning stages of MGS4 but in all these trailers, where is big boss? Kojima (creator, director, writer of the series) stated that the artist took "artist liberty when creating the poster" but you have to wonder, where did he get this idea??

    Remember the last trailer showing Snake blending in with the statues and after the clearing Snake removes his mask to reveal a very young Snake?! Kojima is known very well for fake-outs and surprises (Raiden the star of MGS2, for example). Maybe this is just a fake-out, right? In an interview with Gamepro Kojima was asked "Is the game a linear or non-linear experience" and his response to them was "If I say that, it will reveal some of the secrets. You'll probably want to ask who that young-looking Snake is in the trailer, right?" So it wasn't just a fake-out, it was part of the game. What about Snake injecting himself, or Snake putting a gun in his mouth, what about Eva being in the game (is she Solid and Liquids mother?), Who's gonna save Raiden and whose grave is Snake visiting in the beginning of the trailers? What about how the status/life bar says "Old Snake", maybe Old Snake injects himself to become Young Snake?! Could Old Snake really be Big Boss who came back to end the feud of his clone sons and send them to their bedrooms? Maybe all this is to get people speculating and interested in the game, which is why I am writing about it and you are reading about it. I love it and cannot wait for the release.I already pre-ordered the turbo limited edition, lets just hope there's more than 10 in the US. Sneak Out 61208!

Finally, the sequel to the X-Files movie in being made! On November 2, 20th Century Fox confirmed that Chris Carter will be directing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively. Filming is scheduled to start in December and the tentative release date is July, 25th, 2008.

In two-three weeks I will be receiving a brand-new, totally awesome, ceramic white PS3 Dual-Shock 3 controller from Japan Video Games. I heard all PS3 hardware is region-free, so this controller should work with a NTSC PS3, meaning all U.S. PS1, PS2, and upcoming PS3 titles (older PS3 titles with a patch) will work when firmware update 1.94 is updated. So far Ratchett & Clank: Future Weapons Tools of Destruction is the first game you can buy that has the firmware update included, plus it has rumble already programed.

Also the Smashing Pumpkins are releasing another version of their CD, Zeitgeist, on October 30th. This one has 3 extra songs and a full-length DVD documentary and a snazzy silver cover. Even thought I went ahead and got two different versions so I could get the "extra songs" I'm still gonna buy this one. Why? Cuz I have to. Oh yeah, its only available at Mega-Media-Mart... I mean Best Buy.

I'm really happy that Billy and Jimmy are releasing new music, but this album sounds like two different albums fused together. One quasi-political album plus one comeback-in-your-face-fun album. I kinda hoped that James and D'arcy would come back, but I understand why they didn't. Compared to other bands out now, it's still a great album, I'm only rating it compared to previous SP albums. Hopefully the next album one cohesive unit, not 7 (red, special red, yellow, green, blue, purple, and silver)
